Background of the Study
Digital platforms have become essential spaces for language use and preservation, particularly for indigenous languages. In Calabar, the Efik language is gaining prominence on digital platforms such as social media, blogs, and online news portals. Language planning for Efik in these digital spaces involves initiatives to standardize orthography, promote digital content in Efik, and integrate traditional expressions with modern communication techniques (Inyang, 2023). These efforts are critical in ensuring that the Efik language adapts to the digital age without losing its cultural essence. Educational institutions and cultural organizations collaborate to produce digital materials that support language learning and preservation. However, challenges remain, including technological limitations, variable digital literacy among users, and resistance to change from traditionalists. This study examines the effectiveness of language planning efforts on Efik digital platforms by assessing user engagement, content quality, and the alignment between digital practices and policy objectives (Ekpo, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite vigorous language planning initiatives for Efik in digital media, there is insufficient evidence on their effectiveness in promoting consistent language use. Challenges such as poor digital infrastructure, inconsistent content quality, and limited stakeholder engagement undermine the intended outcomes. This research seeks to address the gap by evaluating how well language planning strategies are implemented on Efik digital platforms in Calabar, identifying factors that hinder effective communication and proposing measures for improvement (Inyang, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To assess the current language planning efforts on Efik digital platforms.
To evaluate user engagement and content quality in Efik digital media.
To recommend strategies for more effective digital language planning.
Research Questions
How effective are current language planning strategies on Efik digital platforms?
What challenges affect the quality and consistency of digital content?
How can digital language planning be enhanced to better promote Efik?
Significance of the Study
